I don’t think there’s a lot of people that would welcome wild spiders into their home, so its good to learn how to secure your home and make it less attractive to insects.
Firstly secure your perimeter. These things will attract insects,
- Piles of leaves
- Stacks of firewood
- Compost bins
- Overgrown trees and shrubs
- Uncut lawns
- Stacks of boxes
- Patches of weeds
Get rid of any spiderwebs you see around the house or your garden. Use a broom or long stick to clear out these webs.
Minimise your outdoor lighting. Bugs love crawling or flying around light because they supply warmth. And the more bugs there are in your property, the more spiders there will be (spiders prey on bugs). So when you keep your outdoor lighting to a bare minimum, you’re effectively lowering the number of bugs and spiders in your home.
Use pesticides or insect repellents. A good homemade pesticide recipe includes half a cup of vinegar, one-and-a-half cups of water, and 20 drops of peppermint essential oil or eucalyptus oil. Spray the solution along entryways and other potential breeding grounds for spiders. Otherwise, you can use a spider repellent from your local home improvement store.
Make sure your insect screens are in place to keep insects out.
