Scientists have discovered a new strain of mosquito which they say could help us fight viruses such as dengue fever and possibly Zika.
Zika virus has hit particularly hard in Brazil where a number of babies and pregnant women have been infected.
Dengue fever has recently hit places like Hawaii, Malaysia and Eqypt with a number of cases reported.
Scientists believe there may be renewed hope of fighting the disease with an Aedes aegypti strain of mosquito that has been infected with two types of Wolbachia. Wolbachia are bacterium that can reduce the risk of dengue spreading to humans.
The “super-infected” mosquito is more likely to block dengue from being transmitted to humans than the singly-infected insect, according to Professor Cameron Simmons from the Peter Doherty Institute at the University of Melbourne said.
