Residents of Cairns have been reminded to kill mosquitoes following the discovery of a positive Zika virus test in the area.
A woman who recently returned from overseas, tested positive for the Zika virus.
In response to the discovery, the Dengue Action Response Team has been spraying the area around the resident’s home to stop the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
Zika virus spread by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, has been linked to birth defects.
The Cairns resident had recently travelled to Bali and Thailand.
This case is a reminder that we are not immune in Australia to mosquito borne diseases. That is why we need to be proactive as the authorities are urging. Kill mosquitoes in the area and ensure your home is protected with insect screens on the doors and windows.
